| Toilets on the train:
Use, maintenance, comfort |

Not very important, the toilets on a train?
Wrong! Not only are
they the sore point in
customer surveys on
comfort, but they also
present hard-to-solve
maintenance problems.
Indeed, toilets ranked
among the priority issues
in the concept train
project. The objective
was to come up with a
new concept from ideas
developed in the
exploratory research.
The final analysis was
done during a four month
student
internship. “Before
imagining solutions,
I spent several weeks
analysing how toilets
have evolved”, explains
Antoine des Horts, a
graduate of the School
of Design Nantes-
Atlantique. “This allowed
me to define three broad
areas of research: how
to make entering the
toilet convenient; how to
allow different uses for
men and women; and
how to increase privacy.”
