The track : a complex system / Project 8
Improve preventive rail maintenance? It can be done!
Rail & Recherche n°26 - January/February/March 2003
Infrastructure maintenance has a lot to do with the quality of service the customer receives. Combined with the maintenance on rolling stock, it guarantees the safety and dependability of train operations. At the present time, rail maintenance is based on the skills of the personnel, fault-detection systems and the calculation of total tonnage that has travelled over the rail. SNCF Research wants to rationalise the approach to maintenance by applying statistical analysis to the factors that contribute to rail rupture. These factors include rail weight and profile, the route, train speeds and environmental conditions, among others. These parameters were identified and quantified recently in university studies conducted in close co-operation with SNCF’s Research and Rail Maintenance Departments.
