The track : a complex system / Project 7
Getting to the bottom of subsidence
Rail & Recherche n°29 - October/November/December 2003
Understanding how the loading produced by passing trains deteriorates railway track components – the rails and roadbed layers – can help to predict when failures will occur so that timely action can be taken. Dynavoie is a software program intended to provide this understanding. It is not the first such program, but it is special in that it has the capacity to make rapid calculations using the finite elements method, which assumes that the modelled objects are a continuous rather than granular system. SNCF Research is working to validate the first prototype by comparing calculations made by the program with readings taken at various locations, in particular on the Paris-Lille TGV line. The Engineering and Infrastructure Departments may eventually use this software tool to better understand the behaviour of railway tracks and improve their specifications.
