Interview 3
A question for Thierry Cami, head of the Diesel Thermal Engine Unit at the equipment engineering centre - SNCF
Rail & Recherche n°40 - July/August/September 2006
Why does SNCF Research need to work on biofuels?
Not much research has been done on the use of biofuels in rail transport, so SNCF needs to build up its own expertise. We know, for example, that B30 has less heating power than diesel fuel. That means higher consumption and special engine adjustments.
Start-up at very low-temperatures is another issue. B30’s filterability limit is theoretically -12°C. This limit, along with the self-starting capability of the engines, must be checked. We also need to test the risks of damage to certain materials and oxidation of metal parts.
As for B100, a full-scale research project will be necessary because our experience with B30 will not be applicable. Some structural specifications may require modification because of B100’s physical and chemical characteristics.
